This is not a movie but played with all the drama of one. Alabama and Auburn tie game with one second left in regulation. Griffith attempts a record 57 yard field goal to win the game only to miss with Auburn’s Chris Davis catching the missed field goal to run it back 109 yards to score the winning touchdown! A-MAZING!!!!
Paul Walker, star of Fast and the Furious film franchise dies in fiery car crash.
1973 – 2013
Oddly few knew his name but they know who he was from the Fast and the Furious film franchise that made his career explode in 2001’s The Fast and The Furious. He co-starred in the franchise with Vin Diesel as Brian O’Conner. Production for the upcoming Fast and Furious 7 was on break at the time of the crash. The outpouring of condolences upon news of his death came immediately. At first social media believed it to be yet another hoax but after confirmation on his Facebook and Twitter pages, it had become official. Walker’s upcoming film Hours is set to be released on schedule December 13th in 15 select US cities as well as Video On Demand. Hours is a movie in which Walker plays a father who struggled to keep his prematurely born infant alive in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Rest in Peace Paul. We will miss you.

Classic movie review: Point Blank 1967
Lee Marvin is the quintessential Hollywood tough guy. His turn in the role as Walker continues his trend as a man betrayed shot and left for dead in a heist film starring he, John Vernon in his first Hollywood role as Mal Reese and Angie Dickenson as Walker’s sister-in-law Chris. The beginning of the film sets Reese and Walker as heistmen seeking to rob a courier for a major gambling operation on Alcatraz Island as the drop point. Reese betrays Walker and shoots him and leaves him for dead on Alcatraz Island. Walker lives and makes his way off the island and recovers only to discover the Reese has also made off with his wife Lynne. Walker tracks down his estranged wife in his pursuit of Reese only to not find him there. Walker continues his search for Reese who has used his cut of $93,000 to pay off a debt to a crime syndicate.With the help of his sister-in-law Chris, he continues his search for Reese making his way through all his contacts in the underworld hoping to take his revenge and get his money back.
The role of Walker is easy for Marvin as he is known for such hard nosed protagonists of old Hollywood films. He is part of the class of movie tough guys among which include Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas, Ernest Borgninem Jim Brown and Chuck Conners. For Point Blank, Marvin is largely responsible for the film’s production in the selection and deferment of all principal casting decisions to John Boorman, a friend with whom he built the movie and the character or Walker around. Marvin met Boorman while on the set of The Dirty Dozen in London and worked out the details of Point Blank tossing out a script for the movie The Hunter but keeping the character of Walker setting him as the protagonist in Point Blank. As classic movies go this rates right up there among one of Lee Marvin’s best. On the 10 scale it earns a 7. Be sure to check this out on Netflix for sure.
Review: Hunger Games: Catching Fire
There are very few movies with sequels that surpass their predecessors. To my knowledge there are only two: The Empire Strikes Back and Godfather Part II. Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the newest entry to that most elite list. The movie is masterfully directed and the story gripping. It truly draws you into the strength but also the prison that Katniss Everdeen resides in the movie. Being that she and Peeta were the survivors (winners) of the 74th Annual Hunger Games they are forced to embark on a Victory Tour through the Districts from which their competitors came from who died in the last games.
Peeta and Katniss are embedded within a world living the lie of a false love they share as established in the games to cover their survival of the games where in reality Katniss just wants to live her life without the eyes of those in the Capitol on her. This time, they have the eyes of President Snow and the new Gamesmaker as they seek to destroy Katniss and the flame she stoked in the last games. So they devise a new games during what is referred to as the Quarter Quell. Only these games will feature tributes that are previous victors of past games from each district. If you were looking for spoilers here, sorry for you there are none. Just a movie that you must see and will cheat yourself out of if you miss out.
Director Francis Lawrence uses his all star cast well and gets masterful performances from them. For Jennifer Lawrence, her Katniss is like an old sweater that is comfortable but becomes more so for her as she is conflicted between keeping up the reality show love story with Peeta for the government and the deep love she genuinely has for her true love Gale and her mother and sister back in District 12. Woody Harrelson’s Haymitch does not miss a beat as a guide through the reality show she and Peeta are forced to live. We see more of Elizabeth Bank’s Effie Trinket and she comes across as more sympathetic to Katniss and Peeta and seems understanding of their plight while rushing them from place to place on the Victory Tour. Donald Sutherland is especially ominous as President Snow as he is the clear villain that exhudes power and influence over Katniss fully aware of the Katniss’s love for Gale and the show she must keep up for the district audiences. Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s Plutarch Heavensbee plays Gamesmaker and political consultant/conspirator to President Snow in his plotting the destruction and death of Katniss Everdeen before the districts’ audience.
As you watch the movie you can tell the costumers had fun with Effie and Stanley Tucci’s Caesar Flickman as her wardrobe is just so flambouant and outrageous as was Caesar’s in his portrayal as Emcee and host of the reality show that is the Hunger Games.
I give this movie a rating on the 10 scale of an 8 and is one you simply cannot miss out on.
Enough Said is a truly cute date night movie!
To begin the inaugural movie review post to this blog, I chose the movie Enough Said for reviewing. This movie is JAmes Gandolfini’s last film before his untimely death in June. The movie stars both he and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss was two single 40-somethign divorcees about to become empty nesters as both their children prepare to leave for college. Dreyfus’s Eva is a travelling massuse who meets Gandolfini’s Albert at a party claiming to not be attracted to anyone at the party. Then to her surprise, Eva is told by the host of the party that Albert liked her and wanted to ask her out. Shortly after they begin dating, she meets Marianne, a massage client she picked up at the party. During their sessions, Marianne rails on and on about her unnamed ex-husband. Later, after Eva meets Albert’s daughter for lunch, when she is at Marianne’s for a session, she discovers that Albert’s daughter is Marianne’s daughter putting together that Albert is the ex-husband Marianne talks about. She confides in her best friend the unbelieveable news and her friend tells her to think of her as a relationship TripAdvisor. Eva proceeds to continue dating Albert only for the negativity Marianne feels for Albert sets in and compromises her relationship with Albert resulting in a disastrous double date with Eva’s best friend Sarah and her husband Will. Later Albert while at Marianne’s picking up their daughter finds Eva there uncovering the truth about Eva’s new attitude toward him and they break up. They daughters eventually leave for college and after some time Eva and Albert begin to patch things up between them, ready for what appears to be another go at dating.
